Greenhouse heaters: sizing, safety, and the right type for your setup

The cheapest heater to buy can be the most expensive one to run. It can also fail at the exact moment your seedlings need it. Greenhouse heating starts with heat loss, not heater wattage, so copying another gardener’s setup rarely gives a reliable answer.

Decide what you are protecting

Keeping a greenhouse just above freezing is very different from maintaining warm conditions for tomatoes. Start with a minimum nighttime temperature. Hardy greens and dormant plants may need only frost protection. Seedlings and warm-season crops need a larger temperature lift and much less room for equipment failure.

Write down the coldest outdoor temperature you reasonably expect, then subtract it from your desired indoor temperature. That temperature difference is a major part of the heating calculation.

Estimate heat loss before shopping

Greenhouse heat loss depends on exposed surface area, glazing insulation, air leakage, and the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors. Online greenhouse heat-loss calculators can provide a useful estimate, but use the actual dimensions of the roof and walls rather than floor area alone.

Single film, twin-wall polycarbonate, multiwall panels, and glass all lose heat at different rates. Drafty doors and loose panel edges add another penalty. It is often cheaper to seal obvious gaps and hang an interior thermal curtain than to buy a larger heater.

Add a reasonable reserve for windy nights and door openings. Huge oversizing isn’t ideal. A heater that cycles in very short bursts may create uneven temperatures and wear controls faster.

Electric heaters

Electric heat is clean at the point of use and easy to control with a greenhouse-rated thermostat. It is a good match for small and well-insulated structures when a suitable circuit is nearby. Large heaters may require 240-volt service, which changes the project cost considerably.

Don’t run a high-draw heater through a light extension cord. Greenhouses are damp places, so outlets, circuits, and equipment need the protection required by local electrical rules. A licensed electrician can confirm whether an existing circuit is adequate.

Propane heaters

Propane provides substantial heat without a permanent gas line. That flexibility suits remote greenhouses, but combustion adds water vapor and requires ventilation. Tank capacity and cold-weather vaporization also matter. A small cylinder can become the weak link during a long freeze.

Choose equipment approved for the intended space and follow the manufacturer’s clearance and ventilation instructions. An unvented heater is not a casual substitute for a greenhouse heating system. Keep combustible materials, plastic film, hoses, and plants away from hot surfaces.

Natural gas and vented units

A vented gas heater can make sense for a larger permanent greenhouse near an existing gas service. Installation costs are higher, but fuel cost and heating capacity may be attractive for frequent winter use. These systems need proper combustion air, venting, clearances, and professional installation.

Before buying the heater, ask for a quote on the gas line and vent route. The attractive equipment price can be a small part of the final bill.

Infrared and radiant heat

Radiant heaters warm surfaces and plants more directly than the surrounding air. They can be useful over a propagation bench or a work zone, but coverage and mounting height matter. A hot spot can dry foliage while the opposite corner stays cold.

For seed starting, heat mats with thermostats may be more efficient than raising the temperature of the whole greenhouse. Heat the root zone first, then use space heat to maintain safe air temperature.

Heating and ventilation work together because warming air changes relative humidity without removing its moisture. Penn State Extension explains that relationship in its psychrometric guidance. Use the heater manual and local electrical or fuel-gas rules for the final installation.

Thermostats and air circulation

The thermostat sensor should sit near plant height, out of direct sunlight and away from the heater’s discharge. A sensor on a warm wall can shut the heater down while plants near the glazing freeze.

A small circulation fan helps break up cold pockets and moves warm air away from the ceiling. Gentle, continuous mixing is usually better than blasting one bench with hot air.

Plan for power failures

A winter greenhouse needs a failure plan. That might include a temperature alarm, backup generator, second heater using another fuel, or a way to move valuable plants indoors. Test alarms before cold weather arrives. A device that only works on home Wi-Fi may stop notifying you when the same outage disables the router.

How to compare greenhouse heaters

  • Calculate the heat load for the structure and target temperature.
  • Confirm electrical capacity or fuel delivery before ordering.
  • Use a thermostat intended for the heater’s load.
  • Check moisture rating, clearances, and ventilation requirements.
  • Make replacement fuel or backup power part of the plan.
  • Place an independent thermometer at plant height.

A sensible order of work

Seal leaks, improve insulation where practical, calculate the remaining load, then choose the heater. That sequence usually produces a smaller and more predictable system.
